Dragonriders of Pern

Ah, yes. Quite possibly my oldest fandom. Given that the series started in the 1960s, it's not without fault, but that's what fandom and headcanons are for, right? Also, one thing I love about the Canon, whether or not the books explored it (mostly not), is how incredibly queer the Weyrs are.
Green dragons make up around half the dragon population in each Weyr and while originally female dragons were paired with female riders, along the way in canon Pernese history, the holds started deciding they didn't want their girls Impressing fighting dragons so the greens started picking gay/bi/queer men.
Which one could argue that that percentage of a "city"s population would be unlikely to be queer, but the thing is these riders were specifically chosen to come to the Weyrs because the Search dragons felt they were good candidates. So, influx of queer males to the Weyrs.
And then there's my headcanon where queer women were also surreptitiously removed from hostile Hold environments because the queen egg needs plenty of Candidates, and well, I know McCaffrey said all goldriders were straight, but this is fandomland. The Weyrwoman and the Weyrleader aren't obliged to like each other. Moreta and Sh'gall were friendly mostly, but clearly not In Love. Also, if a queer woman didn't Impress, she was under no obligation to return to her Hold of origin if she didn't want to.
Therefore, the Weyrs are hella queer and I am all for that.

Edit: many or most of the blueriders are also queer, and there's no reason that all brown and bronzeriders would be straight.
