2021 Fic Year In Review
Dec. 27th, 2021 12:29 pmIt's time for the 2021 Fic Review, I guess.
General Fic Stats: 23 fics published (one event fic still technically anonymous but it was out in the open for a couple hours) with 276,095 words and 1062 kudos among them. Not a high kudo number compared to previous years, but it is what it is, I guess.
Favorite Fic: Wayfaring Strangers (Star Wars, Finn & Bodhi Rook, T)
How am I supposed to pick a favorite? Let's go with Wayfaring Strangers because it was a somewhat unusual concept and I know it's not perfect, but I didn't do a bad job on it at all.
Funniest Fic: [Redacted] (Star Wars, [redacted])
Hopefully I remember to come back and unredact this later, because this is the fic that's supposed to still be anonymous until 31 January 2022.
Cutest Fic: [Redacted] (Star Wars, [redacted])
See above. Sigh. I didn't really write much fluff this year.
Kinkiest Fic: Waiting for It to Embrace Me (Star Wars, Kylo/Hux, Kylo/Tentacle Monster, Hux/Tentacle Monster, E)
It's a miniature choose your own adventure with tentacles. So many tentacles.
Saddest Fic: Things We Lost in the Fire (The Little Stranger, Man and Boy; Faraday/Basil, T)
Well, consider the tags Hurt No Comfort and Ambiguous ending. I hope to write a longer fic for this some day with a happier ending, but let's be honest, Faraday is not a happy man and is not good at those pesky little things called "feelings" or "compassion," though he's working on it.
Most Popular Fic: If a Tree Falls in the Arena (Star Wars, Hunger Games; Kylo/Hux, E)
Most popular by hits and kudos. Part one of a series. Part 2 was not nearly as popular, and Part 3 does not exist yet.
Least Popular Fic: Backstage Pass (Annette, Frank of Ireland; Henry McHenry/Doofus, E)
It's a rarepair, an Adjacents pair, and both media came out in 2021, so the stars are not exactly aligned for a wide audience.
Most Cringe-Worthy Fic: Just Know When That Glass Is Empty, That the World Is Gonna Bend (Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, Kylo/his hand, E)
Kylo, you are a mess and you have no one but yourself to blame.
Most Challenging Fic: Technician, Translator, Stormtrooper, Spy (Star Wars; Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy; Gen, M)
This was a massive undertaking. Over 100k words, blending two different but complimentary canons, and making it work pretty dang well, if I may say so myself.
Honorable Mention: How Terribly Strange to Be Seventy (Star Wars, Kylo/Hux, T)
They're not a happy couple, they're not good for each other, but if they try, maybe they can make things work.
General Reflections: 2021 was the Year of Longfic, with three fics over 30k, one of them over 100k, and a couple or few others in the 10k range. Which is a lot of words for me. Kylux Fandom is a lot smaller than Captain America fandom, and then within the Kylux fandom, I never really seemed to gain traction. I think I had one reader disappear after my AO3 name and Twitter name got linked but eh, their loss. They clearly had enjoyed my fics before they knew who I was, so I can be petty, too. I don't know if I really truly consider myself as part of the Kylux fandom as I did at this point last year. I'm writing Kylux fic, Adjacents fic, but I'm not trying to be part of the fandom anymore since making those inroads proved so difficult. I'll just have my little circle, a few people who read my stuff, and write what I want to write.
