ABA lifelist
Jan. 2nd, 2019 09:23 pmSo, I realized it had been a couple years since I downloaded the latest ABA (American Birding Association) checklist, so I went ahead and got the current one, and I'm transferring over my species seen (and questionable counts from when I was an excitable child and probably counted some zoo birds, but since some are possible local species, I have them as "maybe?") to the latest version.
However, given a recent discussion I saw on the What's This Bird? subreddit, I am thinking I may have misidentified a Cassin's Kingbird as a Western. I saw it in Los Angeles in December some years ago, but according to WTB, there shouldn't be any Westerns in CA at this time of year, they should all have migrated to Mexico and Central America, whereas the Cassin's does have an overwintering population in SoCal. Yeah, the range maps on the Cornell Bird Labs website agree. And they look very similar, especially when you're looking at a small bird at the top of a tree going "Ok, which of the two nearly identical-looking yellow-bellied western Kingbirds is this?" So, i am changing that ID to Cassin's based on new evidence.
